Bluestem 2017

What is the Bluestem Award Program?

The Bluestem Program is an annual award given to the author of the book voted most outstanding by students in grades three through five in participating Illinois schools. It is designed for students in grades 3-5 who are ready for longer titles than found on the Monarch list, but not quite ready for the sophistication of some of the Rebecca Caudill titles.

Named in honor of Big Bluestem which is the state prairie grass, the award may include both timeless classics and current titles, as well as books that have appeared on Monarch and Rebecca Caudill lists.

Who may participate?

Any student in grades three through five may participate. At Meadowbrook, third graders are required to read five, fourth graders must read six and fifth graders must read seven out of the twenty books on the current Bluestem list.

Why participate?

This list represents an excellent array of children's book authors and illustrators. Also, students who participate will get the opportunity to join their classmates at our annual voting party.

How do I participate?

Students must read or listen to their minimum amount of books from the following list and complete and "turn in" the Bluestem form that is in their school Google Drive. The books must be read or listened to entirely.

The deadline is Friday, January 27, 2017
